Twenty percent of searches in web browsers involve localizing language, Jackson Lo stated near the beginning of his presentation, “The State of Local Search” at Web Marketing Wednesday on November 23.


It’s a number that gets less shocking the more time you spend thinking about it. One out of every 5 searches are related to local products and services.

On smart phones, that number rises from 20% of searches to 40%. In about three years, there will be one smart phone for every person on earth.

As those statistics show, local search will be an increasingly important part of any search profile for businesses in coming years. How can we make sure that our businesses will be found?

Jackson outlined five major aspects of local search optimization, including both on-site and off-site factors.

The event was spurred by some fantastic growth in the Ottawa Web Marketing Meetup Group, which has grown in leaps and bounds since our last Web Marketing Wednesday and now stands at around 150 marketers in Ottawa.
